Kammerling’s Ginseng Spirit

posted by Tom Hemmingway on the 13th January 2012

A self-confessed ‘drinks anorak’, Alex Kammerling knows a thing or two about alcohol. Making his debut in the drinks trade in 1993, there is little he hasn’t seen or done. Since then, he has been responsible for inventing hundreds of cocktails, publishing a cocktail book and inventing his very own spirit.

Micro-distillery: Sacred Gin

posted by Tom Hemmingway on the 28th October 2011

Over the last couple of years, the gin world has undergone a renaissance. Never has gin been so popular with many new and exciting players entering the foray. New micro-distilleries like Sipsmith and Chase have been holding their own against the long established, major brands. Sacred Gin is no different.

Located an 11 minute drive from the shop, the Sacred Distillery hand-distill their very own gin and vodka. It’s London Dry Gin follows the traditions of old whilst infusing a modern approach creating a gin more fresh and flavoursome than most.

Craft Beer: The Kernel Brewery

posted by Tom Hemmingway on the 24th October 2011

The micro-brewery from Bermondsey that everyone has been talking about. The Brewery has really taken off since winning its first award in July 2010. Produced in limited quantities, each weekly batch differs from the last with each drop lovingly bottled by hand. Brewer Evin O’Riordain’s mantra is simply to provide good beer and boy does he deliver.

The Kernel Brewery follows the US model of craft brewing; more flavour than your generic mass market beers. Evin uses hops from as far away as Australia and the US. These imbue his beers with that extra oomph you simply cannot get from solely using British hops.

This week at Highbury Vintners – 20/10/2011

posted by Claire Adamson on the 20th October 2011

Hi All,

If you’ve been in in the last couple of days, you might have noticed a familiar (if a little more beardy) face behind the counter. Tom is back after several months of extensive research into the drinking cultures of South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He is rearing to go and has missed the store, so make sure you save up your most gnarliest of questions to ask him when you come in over the weekend.

The Squid’s Fist and Unconventional Labeling

posted by Tom Hemmingway on the 18th October 2011

The Squid’s Fist by Some Young Punks 2010, Barossa Valley, Australia.

The first thing you’ll notice about this beauty is the label. A tribute to the Hollywood of old, it looks more like a movie poster than a wine label. It’s very refreshing and reflects how far we’ve come along in the wine world.

As well as the label, the wine inside doesn’t follow conventional forms with the blend comprising of 62% Sangiovese and 38% Shiraz. This might raise some eyebrows but Sangiovese really has flourished in Australia. Climatic conditions aren’t too dissimilar to Tuscany so it’s easy to see why this blend makes sense. The wine is classically Australian but shies away from the infamous Port-like style many drinkers dislike.

Unpretentious in style, it displays oodles of spice and dark fruits on the nose with a slight perfumed hint of rose. It’s fairly big on the palate with juicy cherry fruit flavours and a nice grippy finish.

I enjoyed this little number with a slightly spiced cajun-styled chicken steak and it worked a treat. Definitely decant before serving, it becomes so much better with a bit of air.

It’s £16 a bottle or £14.40 case price. View it by clicking here.

Our Greek wines in the press!

posted by Gillian Sweeney on the 22nd September 2011

Ktima Alpha “Axia” Xinomavro/Syrah 2006, Florina (Selfridges, £16.50; Highbury Vintners, £14.99)
Macedonian producer Alpha makes one of Greece’s most serious wine ranges. Some purists carp about the blending of Greek grapes such as xinomavro with international varieties like syrah, but I think the result here is very fine: open, smoky, peppery fruit with xinomavro’s characteristic edge of bitterness.

You can buy Axia by clicking here.

Domaine Gerovassiliou “Avaton” 2006, Epanomi (Selfridges £15.99; Highbury Vintners, £14)
From the obscure local varieties of mavrotagano, limnio and mavroudi, this is for my money as a serious a Greek red as you’ll come across, with spicy and rich yet with good structure and freshness too. Excellent.

You can buy Avaton by clicking here.
