The Squid’s Fist by Some Young Punks 2010, Barossa Valley, Australia.
The first thing you’ll notice about this beauty is the label. A tribute to the Hollywood of old, it looks more like a movie poster than a wine label. It’s very refreshing and reflects how far we’ve come along in the wine world.
As well as the label, the wine inside doesn’t follow conventional forms with the blend comprising of 62% Sangiovese and 38% Shiraz. This might raise some eyebrows but Sangiovese really has flourished in Australia. Climatic conditions aren’t too dissimilar to Tuscany so it’s easy to see why this blend makes sense. The wine is classically Australian but shies away from the infamous Port-like style many drinkers dislike.
Unpretentious in style, it displays oodles of spice and dark fruits on the nose with a slight perfumed hint of rose. It’s fairly big on the palate with juicy cherry fruit flavours and a nice grippy finish.
I enjoyed this little number with a slightly spiced cajun-styled chicken steak and it worked a treat. Definitely decant before serving, it becomes so much better with a bit of air.
It’s £16 a bottle or £14.40 case price. View it by clicking here.
